Turn the Bus, a digital lab and AI learning solutions provider strives to enable students in the remotest parts of India to get access to curricular education by leveraging the rising smartphone access and cheap data connectivity. The client connected with our team at 180DC SSCBS to push forward their aim of eliminating intergenerational poverty by supporting disadvantaged children in India with sufficient resources in order to successfully graduate High School. The problem revolved around increasing gross enrolment and retention rate of students in Bihar along with strengthening and conceptualizing education through the idea of peer learning and Self Help Groups (SHGs). Added to it was the task of ensuring proper food and nutrition to the deprived children of the society. It also entailed on effectively leveraging its partnership with Jeevika, an initiative of Government of Bihar for Poverty Alleviation, with the objective of social & economic empowerment of the rural poor and to secure matriculation of girl students in the state. Moreover, the project was also concerned with general operations such as administration and organizational structure, deciding the location of pilot projects as well as formation of Self-Help Groups in the locations identified. The team's research was also focused on formulating a general layout of the frequency of meetings and the weekly schedule of Pankh (Student SHG) girl students. With the client's targeted problems in mind and the motivation to create social impact, the team conducted intensive research and brainstormed ideas to present the best solution at hand.
With an aim of ensuring matriculation of girl child in the state and strengthening conceptualization, the team's ideation and intensive group discussions resulted in the concept of peer learning group for girl child in Bihar, named Pankh (Hindi word for wings). To ensure effective implementation, the team’s role boiled down to 3 main deliverables: 1. Macroeconomic Analysis: The team conducted a detailed research around educational support schemes and scholarships while establishing the branding of SHGs and performing a comparative analysis of Jeevika with similar SHGs 2. Operations and Administration: This aspect of the project focused on building an efficient organizational structure for smooth flow of operations and to determine target locations for pilot projects 3. Execution: To ensure effective execution, the final step involved formation of 2 new SHGs with a goal of ensuring peer supported learning. It also included the task of brainstorming the daily working and curriculum of the SHGs In addition to these tasks, the team brainstormed and formulated a systematic study routine with skill development incentives such as speaker sessions and career guidance camps. The comprehensive database for these sessions was also prepared by the team. The team improved SHG operations and assisted the management in order to leverage the digital learning centers set-up by Jeevika in multiple districts of Bihar.
The team’s research and conceptualization helped Turn the Bus structure the learning of students in Bihar. The strategies proposed resulted in higher engagement, skill development and ensured that the benefits of education reach the disadvantaged students. The team’s report also facilitated Rs. 87800+ as beneficiary of govt schemes to girl students in Bihar. The successful implementation also led to a fall in female school dropout rate in Bihar to 6.7% in 2022. The Jeevika collaboration accelerated its presence across 1,00,000+ students of Class X and XII in Bihar in 2022. This also facilitated more than 40,000 students across Bihar to have access to the Turn the Bus app. Partners from Jeevika Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society's coordinators also organized enrollment drive sessions to enroll students in Class X and Class XII. The streamlining and structuring of the formation process of Pankh including branding, onboarding, incentivization as well as alumni network and succession resulted in effective implementation of the tasks in hand. Thus, the entire process was impacted and the research and ideation led to fruitful results and a significant social impact across Bihar.
